Interviews

Cryptopsy - Flo Mounier

23/05/08  ||  Kampfar

Cryptopenis!

Global Domination note: This is exactly one of those interviews we don’t want at the site. Uninspired “rockstars” with exactly no sense of humour or dedication whatsoever. The saddest thing is that we were contacted by their label about eventually doing an interview in support of their new, praised (kidding) album. You would think that the interviewee would actually be kinda interested in doing some decent promotion for it then, right? Wrong. Flo’s replies are as fucken dull as one could ever hope for, in case you are into dull answers. Well, staffer Kampfar did his best, so no blame on his part. It’s impossible to make good interviews with people who just don’t fucken care. So, seriously – fuck Cryptopsy, fuck Flo, fuck this interview and fuck gravity blasts – whatever that is supposed to be. You know the saying “I rather watch paint dry than…”, well, this interview’s got some pictures for ya to ease the pain of reading thru this crap. Over to Kampfar:

Global Domination: Hello and welcome, even though I hate you all, to this, hopefully, interesting interview. I will not pester Flo overly much about their latest, and that simply because I didn’t think it was ass, nor am I a 12 year old. Only sometimes. Hello and welcome to you as well, Flo.

Flo Mounier: Thanks for having me.

Why Cryptopsy? I’ve read somewhere that the English language has close to 500000 words, why did you guys have to invent one? Do you remember what you had in mind when settling for this moniker?

It’s because we are marketing geniuses, lol. When people ask what the band is called we usually have to repeat the name 3 times before it registers. We were young. I think that it was originally meant to be the autopsy of a crypt, many different meanings behind that.

No, you can't click shit in this picture.

Now over to your latest offering, namely “The unspoken king”, a release which sure set some, a lot even, of your fans on fire. How many hate-mails have the band received so far? And, does all this flak drain the will to go on as a band?

We have received quite a few I would say, but we have also receive a lot of positive e-mails. The littlest changes sometimes takes some getting used to and I feel that this is the case. We’ve been playing live since the material was leaked and have been very well received so far. When people see Matt and the rest of the band live they tend to be quite impressed. It doesn’t drain us, we like playing music, simply.

Sell-out or not, “The unspoken king” is nonetheless very fucking different from “Once was not”, or any other Crypto release. What motivated this change of pace into what is undeniable death core territory?

Well, to sell out there need to be money involved, so you can scratch that. And death core? Another label that I have no idea what it is. The only thing that changed is using some clean vocals on 10% of the album, and writing catchy parts.

I would like to add that I found the clean vocals parts grating.

Grating?

I wonder if you have tested any of the new songs in front of an audience? If so, did they throw knifes and grenades at ya? Please do elaborate, a bit, on how things are on the touring front.

Things are excellent on the touring front and the people that heard the songs in our entourage were very impressed.

Not letting go of yer new release just yet, as I wonder if it turned out all you wanted it to be? And, counting out your latest, which Cryptopsy album is closest to your heart? I would also like to know if there is an album you wish you hadn’t made?

Yes, we are very happy with the finished product. That’s a really tough question cause I appreciate all the albums we have made. They remind me of different times, moods, people. They are also quite different from one another, and thats what I think I dig the most.

Do you admit that your placing on “Once was not” was a wee bit high? I guess so, all the time you are more baked into the mix this time.

Sure if it makes you feel better.

We like watching paint dry.

How many different members have Cryptopsy featured? 100? I would also like to know how many new faces there is to be found on “TUK”.

Not quite 100, and 2 on the recording of TUK.

What is it with you guys and vocalists? It seems like all you ever had stay for one album only. Now, who is the asshole?

Have you had a death metal band for over 15 years with the same members…? I think you just answered your own question.

I couldn’t help notice you now have a (young) woman on board, one not surprisingly doing keyboards. So, how long before you all want to bang her and break up the band because you now all hate each other to the (slit) guts? This question is very relevant, thank you.

Yes very relevant, she is a studio musician and not a full time member.

You have been around for a while, so would you care to let us know the extremes of your experiences? Be it a special tour or recording session.

How about this interview, does that count? We play extreme music, so most tours and most studio experiences are pretty extreme.

Whether people like Cryptopsy or not, one can’t deny you are one helluva drummer, gravity blast and all. So, how long can you keep hitting those skins as ferociously as you do? Is age taking its toll or is there is much juice left in your rotting carcass?

Well, it seems that the more experience I get the easier the playing gets, and it leaves room to hit with more power and dynamics.

Are you able to make a living from what the music brings, or do you have a dayjob to worry about as well?

Some of us work and some of us don’t, but there really isn’t much money to be made from this kind of music, unless you are constantly on the road.

Do you remember what made you want to become a drummer, any specific happening creating the urge? Remember getting yer first kit?

I think at first I was just impressed by the look of a drum kit and all the elements, pieces, hardware etc… My father made me my first kit from the remains of an old Slingerland kit. Yep, I remember quite well.

Would you care to elaborate a bit on your current kit? We have some musicians around these parts, you know.

No, I didn’t know that. I currently use a Pearl reference kit, Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks (extreme 5b), Remo heads, Beyer dynamic mics and Roland electronics.

Do you have any favorite beater? Please do mention cunts from different genres if you feel up for it.

Yeah, lots of favorite cunts, just too many to mention. Here’s just a few: Denis Chambers, Kenneth Schalk, John Bonham, etc, etc, etc…

Your surname looks undeniably French, and therefore I wonder if you have been paying attention to the French (extreme) metal scene as of late? I might be wrong, but I’ve heard/read that many French-Canadians have tight bonds to their homeland. Anyway, the French scene is fucking ace. If you aren’t familiar with Gojira, I do hate you a bit.

Actually we played with them at a metal fest in Belgium, yes, I know who they are. But I have to admit that I don’t really keep up to date with the scene, whether it be in Europe or in North America.

Paint my penis.

Would you be so kind to name the 5 most important (metal) albums in your life?

Death: “Human”, Cynic: “Focus”, Suffocation: “Effigy…,” Faith No More: “King for a Day…”, Candiria: “What Doesn’t Kill…”.

Forgetting music, what other hobbies/interests do you have? You out hunting bear and moose, or do you prefer to stay indoors, reading books and whatnot?

I like to work out, and my favorite thing in the world to do is spend time with my son.

If visiting the grand country of yours, which places would you suggest going to? And please, no city suggestions. I hate people. And also, is it true that you need a clean criminal sheet to enter beyond the borders of Canada?

Canada and the US, yes, it’s preferable, but not necessary, for Canada. I recommend the Canadian Rocky Mountains… spectacular, no people but a lot of wild life.

Name the top 5 reasons for why you’ll never leave for the U.S. I sure know of some very fine Americans, but as a country I think they have fucking lost it? Agree?

I think there is lots of problems in the US at the moment, like in other places of course, but there definitely need to be a change and a caring for its people more so than for national defense.

Five reasons:

1. My son.

2. My son.

3. My son.

4. My son.

5. My son.

What do you dislike most about your country? Any dirt we outsiders wouldn’t know of? Thanks to The Crimelibraries I know you have had some (very nasty) serial-killers over there, but besides that, I know very little. Enlighten us.

I dislike long winters, and that’s the case in Montreal: long winters.

Which is the best Canadian beer? In fact I have never heard of a single one.

There are many Canadian beers, and the best depends on personal taste, I guess.

Over and out from Norway, very much thank you for answering my questions. And, the best of luck in the future.

Thanks, take care.
